It’s very obvious that there are still an abundance of people still riding the high of the recent Black Panther film. With such interest peaked in the realm of black superheroes, there felt a need to take a look into a project collaboration between Marvel Comics and musical artist, The Weeknd. Yes, in case you missed it, The Weeknd teamed up with Marvel Comics to create a comic sharing a name with his chart topping album, “STARBOY”. Released on June 13th, theirs not much to the story, yet. But we do get a solid origin story.
In the city of Alphatron, and evil mastermind brings together all the criminal organizations in the city and holds the city in terror. Kind of like Cyrus from “The Warriors”, but actually evil. I don’t want to spoil the first issue but i will say that it’s very promising as a series. Writers, La Mar Taylor, and Christos Gaga, along with The Weeknd himself, very much have a clear vision for what they want to do with this series. Eric Nguyen and Guru-eFX’s art style paints a very dark dystopian city with edgy line work, heavy shadows, and gruesome scenery. It’s definitely a series worth keeping an eye on. Especially if your looking to fill your black superhero void. If you can’t make it to a brick and mortar comic shop, a digital copy can be purchased on Marvel’s website.
